Things that should be a part of your evacuation plans

Here are a few things that should be, at minimum, a part of your general evacuation plan:

    Prepare an evacuation plan

  • First off, you need to draw a floor plan of your home and mark at least two escape routes from each room.
  • Once you have the floor plan ready you need to practice it with your family members. This is very important. Each and ever member in your house should know the escape route like the back of their hands. This can save their lives
  • Designate a meeting place without placing themselves in unnecessary dangers or interfering with rescue efforts. This is essential. It is important that after an evacuation all the house members meet a pre-designated place. This will insure that every member is safe and sound and none of them is missing.

Keep yourself prepared for emegency evacuation

  • Make sure you car is filled up and if needed, you can drive out of the locality. This is especially true in case of terrorist attacks.
  • Always keep a bag ready with items ready with survival kit. The survival kit may contain regular supplies and first-aid supplies. Keep this bag where it can be reached easily, preferably somewhere around the meeting place.
  • If a natural disaster strikes (like tornados), be prepared to leave the area or the town and go to a shelter house that is far from the affected or to-be-affected area.
  • Remember, pets are not allowed in many shelter houses. Always a have a plan for them. Just like us, they don't deserve die in a mishap.
