Just like the preceding section we have once again prepared a quick checklist of things that you can do to make your current or existing apartment more safe and secure.
Know thy neighbors
- First and foremost, try to get to know who your neighbors are. Are there any suspicious people living in the neighborhood? Keep your abreast with what's happening in the area, especially if the neighborhood is prone to burglary.
Secure the doors and windows
- Make sure your door has a dead bolt in addition to any knob lock. It would be a folly to rely on chain locks. A dead bolt is always a good choice for better security. Peepholes are another thing that you must consider. If you happen to have children in the house, try to have extra peepholes at their height.
- Windows that are accessible from the ground or balconies or fire escapes should be secured. They should have stops to prevent others from getting into the apartment. This is very crucial for security.
- Similarly, if your current or existing apartment has sliding glass doors, use a stop of some sort in the track to keep them from opening more than a few inches.
Lights can be life-savers
- Lighting is very crucial for security. It is therefore important for you to make sure that there is, at minimum, adequate lighting around your current or existing apartment. If you happen to notice that a particular area needs more light, notify your landlord, as soon as possible. By law, a landlord is required to provide safe environment. In case of burnt out bulbs in or around the common areas, notify the maintenance people.
- Always be alert when using the laundry or other common facilities, especially after dark. It is always a good idea to do laundry, swimming, etc, with a friend. Also, if these facilities have locking doors, make sure they are locked, and don't let anyone in who doesn't have a key.
Security systems...use them!
- Many apartments have a security system. If your current or existing apartment happens to have one, then you should use it. Remember, you shouldn't buzz in strangers, especially when you are entering or leaving the building.
